EPH SPORTS

FALL WRAP-UP

Women’s cross country claimed its second NCAA Div. III title in three years. Earning All-America status were Jenn Campbell ’05 and Caroline Cretti ’06, who finished third and fourth, respectively, at the national race. On the men’s side, All-American Neal Holtschulte ’06 was individual runner-up, driving Men’s cross country to ninth at NCAAs.

Sunday, Nov. 7, will go down as one of the finest days in Eph sports history, with four teams winning NESCAC tournament championships and advancing to NCAA play. Volleyball, field hockey, and men’s and women’s soccer emerged victorious from competitive conference play, with field hockey and women’s soccer knocking off heavily favored Middlebury teams.

Moving onto the national stage, volleyball (33-4) advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight, falling 3-1 to NYU in front of a packed house in Chandler Gym. Earning All-America honors were seniors Joyia Chadwick and Robin Young, the first-ever Eph volleyball All-Americans.

Men’s soccer ( 14-3-2) also made the national Elite Eight, dominating throughout in the quarterfinal tilt but falling to SUNY-Geneseo after an overtime “golden goal.” Women’s soccer ( 10-6-3) also lost a heartbreaker in the NCAA second round, falling to Wheaton (MA) on penalty kicks.

After surprising unbeaten Middlebury to take the NESCAC crown, field hockey (14-4) bowed out in the second round of the NCAAs. All-Americans were Tara Boyd ’05, Wendy Stone ’05, and Emily Grannon ’06.

Football (6-2) began the Mike Whalen era with a strong campaign. Returning just a handful of starters, the first-year head coach nearly knocked off Amherst on the road, falling in the closing minutes, 13-10.

WINTER UPDATE

With a Dec. 4 win over University of Maine-Fort Kent , men’s basketball (8-1) set the NCAA Div. III record for consecutive wins at home at 63. The record stretches back to January 2001. The Ephs will try to extend it at home on Jan. 3. … Women’s basketball (8-1) carries a five-game win streak into break, with a 79-53 win over Smith. … Men’s and women’s swimming & diving opened with decisive wins over Wesleyan. Their first big test will come at home Jan. 8 against Amherst. … Men’s ice hockey ( 3-4-1) has impressed early against a brutal schedule and nearly pulled off a huge upset at No. 2 Manhattanville, falling 4-3 late in the third period. … Women’s ice hockey (4-4) rolled past Amherst 8-0.
