In the further adventures of Elissa Brown, our West-Coast, first-year, first-person heroine attempts to burst the Purple Bubble by riding north on her bicycle. In the process, she discovers that Vermont, at least at first glance, is a little different.

COLLEGE NEWS

COME HOME!

This weekend's Homecoming activities begin Friday afternoon, Nov. 11, with a computer science alumni career panel at 2:30. Student and alumni bike riders assemble at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at "The Ark" on the corner of Walden and Hoxsey Streets for an hour-and-a-half ride. (Contact Michael.P.Fairhurst@williams.edu for more details.) At 10:00 a.m. Dr. Mitchell Besser '76 presents an Eph's Gateway lecture on his program to reduce HIV infection in South Africa . Varsity football meets Amherst at noon, followed by the Jewish Religious Center's 15th Anniversary Homecoming Reception, an Octet concert, and a host of other activities.

ALCOHOL TASK FORCE SUBMITS REPORT

Continuing work begun in 2004, the College's Alcohol Task Force has submitted its final report, with recommendations, based in part on a survey of student alcohol use and its effects. The Record has presented the findings and initial campus responses. (Note: Because the College is unaware of comparable public information on similar schools, the Web site referred to in the article is available only on campus.)

INTRODUCING THE GRAD STUDENTS IN ART HISTORY

The Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art is a two-year program established in collaboration with the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Its graduates go on to curatorial or administrative positions, or continue their studies at the university level.

BOLIN FELLOWS APPOINTED TO WILLIAMS FOR RESEARCH AND TEACHING

WILLIAMS STUDENTS FLOCKING TO PROF. KUBLER AND CHINESE STUDIES

According to The Williams Record, "Cornelius Kubler, Stanfield Professor of Asian Studies and chair of the Asian Studies Department, is best known to his students as a brilliant but humble professor of Mandarin Chinese. Yet Mandarin is just one of 12 languages Kubler picked up during the journey that eventually led him to the Purple Valley and to a Chinese program that has more than doubled in size on his watch..."

PROF. BUELL'S BOOK EXPLORES HISTORY OF EARLY CHRISTIANITY

Associate professor of religion Denise Buell's new book, "Why This New Race: Ethnic Reasoning in Early Christianity" (Columbia University Press) has been described as indispensable for readers interested in the intersections of race, ethnicity, and religion.

CULTURAL COUNCIL RECOGNIZES PROF. KECHLEY

The Massachusetts Cultural Council has announced an Artist Grant Program award to Professor of Music David Kechley. The $5,000 award recognizes the exceptional quality of Professor Kechley's compositions.

MEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY WINS FIRST EVER ECAC TITLE

The Ephmen attacked from behind to win Saturday's ECAC cross-country championship in what head coach Pete Farwell called "one of the best team races I've seen since we won the NCAA title in 1995."
