HOMECOMING AND WILLIAMS' NEW TAILGATING POLICY

Fans can no longer bring their own alcohol to Williams home football games. Beer and wine will be available on Weston Field for purchase by anyone of legal drinking age. Fans may bring their own non-alcoholic beverages in sealed plastic bottles, but NOT in cans or glass bottles.

PRESIDENT SCHAPIRO ADVANCES CAMPUS DIVERSITY INITIATIVES

With support of the trustees, and from campus and alumni leaders, Morty Schapiro is rallying Williams' governance structure to focus this year on proposing ways to make Williams as open and welcoming as possible for members of historically marginalized groups. A coordinating committee is overseeing the effort, which is modeled on the structure that so successfully led to concrete proposals in the College's 2000 strategic planning process. There will soon be a Web site to keep all interested parties abreast of developments. Ephnotes will let you know when it's available.

AMBASSADOR BRAUN TO DELIVER MCC ANNIVERSARY ADDRESS

Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun will deliver the keynote address honoring the Multicultural Center’s 15th anniversary this Thursday, November 4 at 8 p.m. in Chapin Hall. Braun, who became the first African-American female senator in 1992, has had a distinguished career in public service.

CDE PANEL DISCUSSES GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES

The Center for Development Economics’ forum, "Global Challenges and the Role of Education," was held on Saturday, October 9. Discussion ranged from post-Cold War economic challenges to intercultural understanding. Follow the link for pictures and more.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT WINS NOBEL PRIZE

Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 8 for her efforts to promote ecologically viable social, economic and cultural change. PLANETARIUM PRESENTS "TRANSITS OF VENUS"

The College’s Milham Planetarium presents "Transits of Venus, So Rare, So Wonderful" on Friday evenings through December 3. SOCIOLOGIST KAI ERIKSON AT WILLIAMS THIS FALL

Yale University’s William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Sociology and American Studies Kai Erikson, whose work focuses on American communities, human disasters, and ethnic conflict, has joined the Williams faculty for the fall 2004 semester. *SEE http://www.williams.edu/admin/news/releases.php?id=817

BIOLOGIST LARA HUTSON RECEIVES NIH GRANT

Lara Hutson, assistant professor of biology, has been awarded a three-year, $495,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health for her research project "Small heat shock proteins in retinotectal development."
