First-year Elissa Brown of Palo Alto, California, has unicycled across the Golden Gate Bridge and says her favorite poet is Billy Collins, former Poet Laureate of the United States (who read in the ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance two weeks ago). BROADWAY SERVES UP GRAND FINALE FOR WEEKLONG CELEBRATION OF '62 CENTER’S INAUGURAL YEAR

Following ten performances over nine days--from a brand-new Williamscentric work by Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist William Finn ’74 to dancers and musicians from the New York City Ballet--an all-star Broadway lineup paid tribute at the start of’62 Center for Theatre and Dance’s inaugural season. The Oct. 10 "'62 Center Broadway Gala" featured song and dance performances by Brent Barrett, Laura Benanti, Jim Borstelmann, Charlotte d'Amboise, Stacey Kent, Judy Kuhn, Terrence Mann, James Naughton, Billy Porter, Jenifer Ringer, Tommy Tune, and Damian Woetzel. Roger Rees and Ann Reinking created and co-directed the event, which was presented by the center’s principal donor, Herbert Allen '62 to his classmates, in whose honor the ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance is named. XAVIER PROFESSOR JOINS HER STUDENTS AT WILLIAMS

Heike Geisler, assistant professor of chemistry at Xavier University in New Orleans, which was devastated by Katrina, will pursue her work in physical chemistry and help support eight Xavier students already in residence at Williams. "THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE BERKSHIRES"

Described by Samuel Fessenden Clarke Professor of Biology Hank Art as "a series of field trips" to the diverse settings of the Berkshires, "The Natural History of the Berkshires" Web site was established to inform students enrolled in a course of the same name. Creators Art, Benjamin Brooks ’08, Pamela Council ’07, and Jason Ren ’08 now share it with the wider community.

EPH SPORTS

Football (2-2) rebounded from a slow start with a dominant 39-18 victory at Middlebury. The young Eph squad jumped out to a 33-3 lead at the half, led by QB Pat Lucey ’08, named NESCAC offensive player of the week for his efforts.

Men’s Soccer (11-1) continues to roll through New England, taking down no. 6-ranked Middlebury 1-0 Saturday. Women’s Soccer (9-2) remains second in the conference, despite a 1-0 loss at Middlebury.

Women’s Cross Country, working to defend its 2004 national title, placed an impressive second at Div. 1 New Englands. Pacing the team was Captain Caroline Cretti ’06, who was fourth overall. Men’s Cross Country took eighth in the men’s race, second among Div. III teams.

Volleyball (11-9) ranks eighth in New England, while Field Hockey (8-3) is 15th nationally.

Women’s Tennis placed second at the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, where the team took fifth last year. Courtney Bartlett ’06 won the second singles flight and joined with Allie Rottkamp ’08 to win third doubles.

Men's Golf capped a fine fall season by winning both the both the Duke Nelson Tourney (at Middlebury) and their second straight NESCAC title, hosted at Taconic. Women’s Golf, in just its second varsity season, made dramatic progress, twice finishing ahead of Amherst--a 20-year-old program--in tournament standings.

The Women’s Crew varsity eight took second at the Stonehurst Regatta, knocking off reigning Div. III champ Ithaca, along with many Div. I boats. Men's Crew put its two varsity eight boats in 12th and 17th places in the men’s race.
