ROBERT ENGLE '64 WINS NOBEL PRIZE IN ECONOMICS
Robert F. Engle III '64 has been awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in economics for developing statistical tools that have improved researchers' ability to forecast complex aspects of economic growth over time. He shares the award with British economist Clive W.J. Granger. Engle earned his Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1969 and currently teaches finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University.

REGIONAL CLUBS CELEBRATE THE WILLIAMS CAMPAIGN
Ephs came out in droves in early October to celebrate the start of The Williams Campaign (http://www.williams.edu/alumni/campaign/) in Boston, New York, and Washington, DC. BOARD OF TRUSTEES WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS
The Williams Board of Trustees heads into 2003-04 with three new members. Jonathan A. Kraft '86 and Ava Clayton Spencer '77 were each appointed by the board to a five-year term, and Steven S. Rogers '79 was elected to a five-year term by Williams alumni.

Kraft is president and C.O.O. of the Kraft Group, a conglomerate of companies with a wide array of interests including sports and entertainment, paper and packaging, and private equity investments. He serves as Alumni Fund associate agent for the Class of 1986.

Spencer is associate vice president for higher education policy at Harvard University, where she serves as a senior advisor to Harvard President Lawrence Summers.

Rogers is the Gund Family Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and has been named Outstanding Professor of the Kellogg executive program nine times.

Williams awarded Spencer and Rogers Bicentennial Medals in 1997 and 2000, respectively, for their outstanding achievements.

LECTURE SERIES WILL EXAMINE ANTI-SEMITISM
A year-long series of lectures and events dealing with the problem of anti-Semitism began at the College on Monday, Oct. 13, when Paula Fredriksen, the William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of the Appreciation of Scripture at Boston University and noted authority on the history of early Christianity, presented "Gibson's Gospels: History, Hollywood, and the Bible." The second lecture, "The Invention of Franz Kafka: Walter Benjamin and Hannah Arendt's Response to Anti-Semitism," will be delivered by Mikhail Iampolski, associate professor of comparative literature at NYU, on Thursday, Nov. 6. The final fall event in the series will be presented on Monday, Nov. 17 by William G. Dever, professor emeritus of Near Eastern studies at the University of Arizona. His talk will focus on his archaeological work in Israel and Jordan. The series' remaining three events will take place in the spring.

INTERNATIONAL PANEL DISCUSSES POST-SOVIET RUSSIA
Williams' Oakley Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences hosted a two-day symposium titled "A Leap to Freedom? Russia Since the Fall of Communism" on Oct. 3 and 4 at Mt. Hope Farm. The keynote speaker, Lilia Shevtsova, a Russian political analyst and senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, joined Edward Roslof, director of the U.S. Fulbright Fellowship Program in Moscow, Linda Cook of Brown University, and Darra Goldstein, professor of Russian at Williams, and others to discuss issues of religion, economics, and cultural and daily life in contemporary Russia.

JOANNA ADLER '86 DIRECTS "THE VIENNA NOTES"
Williamstheatre will open its fall season on Oct. 16 with "The Vienna Notes" by Richard Nelson. Returning to Williams to direct the play-whose political overtones led one critic to describe it as "a terrifying farce"-is Joanna P. Adler '86, a successful actress and director whose appearance in "The Boys in the Basement" earned her an Obie Award in 1995. Adler has also appeared on "Sex and the City" and in many films, and has acted in and directed works in New York and in regional theaters.

GOMORY '50 DISCUSSES GLOBAL TRADE AND CAREER FORMATION
Ralph E. Gomory '50, president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, delivered two talks on October 8 as part of the Class of 1960 Scholars Lecture series. The first, a student colloquium, focused on Gomory's early research in mathematics and the formation of his business career and involved discussion of how students might best prepare for their own careers. In the second talk, Gomory discussed global trade and conflicting national interests. A Higgins Lecturer in Mathematics at Princeton before joining IBM's newly founded research division in 1959, Gomory created new areas of applied mathematics and oversaw the development of a broad range of new technologies at IBM.

BOLIN FELLOWS APPOINTED
The College announced the appointment of Hoang Gia Phan and Mérida Rúa as its Gaius Charles Bolin Fellows for 2003-04. Each appointee will teach a semester course and complete dissertation work during the year. The Bolin Fellowship, named in honor of the first African American to graduate from Williams, was instituted in 1985, a century after Bolin was admitted to Williams.

PROFS. AALBERTS AND SMITH WIN FOUNDATION GRANTS
Associate professor of physics Daniel P. Aalberts and assistant professor of chemistry Thomas E. Smith have been awarded grants for research in their respective fields. Professor Aalberts was awarded $155,183 by the National Institutes of Health. His project, "Splicing, Folding, and Stretching Nucleic Acids," aims to expand the predictive power of chemical models of nucleic acid conformations. Professor Smith was granted $177,308 by the National Science Foundation for a program of chemical synthesis research which will involve 12 undergraduate students over a period of three years.

PROF. BROWN'S NEW BOOK EXPLORES INDIGENOUS CULTURE
James N. Lambert '39 Professor of Anthropology Michael F. Brown's new book, "Who Owns Native Culture?" (Harvard University Press, 2003), documents the efforts of indigenous peoples to redefine heritage as a proprietary resource. Professor Brown focuses on the complexity of actual cases and casts light on indigenous claims in diverse fields-religion, art, sacred places, and botanical knowledge-and proposes alternative strategies for defending the heritage of vulnerable native communities. WILLIAMS DEFEATS MIDDLEBURY 35-25 IN SECOND VICTORY OF SEASON
A strong offensive push brought the Ephmen to an early lead in their Oct. 11 battle against Middlebury's Panthers in a game that established Williams' presence for the first time this season. The Ephs scored on each of their first two possessions to take an early 14-0 lead over host Middlebury.

TORI SCOTT NAMED NESCAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Williams senior forward Tori Scott '04 was named NESCAC Player of the Week for leading the Ephs field hockey team to three wins. Scott recorded nine points in the week and became the College's all-time points leader with a total of 115. Scott now holds Williams records for most career goals (40), most career assists (35), and most assists in a season (12).

MEN'S SOCCER TEAM LEAPS 17 SPOTS IN NATIONAL POLL
The latest round of the National Soccer Coaches Association poll shows the men's soccer team catapulting from 25th to seventh place nationally. Coach Russo's team came back after an initial season loss to Babson to close the 17-spot gap.
