NEW STUDENT CENTER WILL HONOR LEADING CAMPAIGN DONOR

In recognition of a $15.75 million Campaign commitment—one of the largest contributions the College has ever received—the Board of Trustees has voted to name the new student center in honor of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous for the time being. To carry on the name of the College’s tenth president, the donor has requested that the central gathering place in the new building be called Baxter Hall.

HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE AWARDS WILLIAMS $1.6 MILLION

Four-year grants to colleges and universities to help them meet the challenges of the increasingly complex world of interdisciplinary science are more important than ever, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute is helping the cause by awarding $49.7 million in grants. Williams, Haverford, and Union Colleges garnered the highest amounts in support of programs to improve undergraduate science teaching.

FACULTY NEWS

JAMES MCALLISTER APPOINTED TO GAUDINO CHAIR

Associate Professor of Political Science James McAllister has been named Gaudino Scholar for 2004-06. At Williams since 1997, professor McAllister has taught a wide variety of courses, including “The Causes of War” and “ America and the World after September 11.” He is currently researching American foreign policy during the Vietnam era, and is active in public lectures, debates, and political forums.

JAMES NOLAN TO DIRECT WILLIAMS-EXETER PROGRAMME

Associate Professor of Sociology James L. Nolan, Jr. has been named director of the Williams-Exeter Programme at Oxford University. Since 1985 the program has enrolled approximately 24 students each year for an intensive immersion in the academic and social life of the university. Professor Nolan is the recipient of Fulbright and NEH fellowships in support of his research in the social sciences. Follow links below for more on Nolan and this year’s Williams-Exeter students.

YEAR-END ROUNDUP

Williams captured its eighth Div. III U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup in nine years, becoming the first of the NCAA’s 1,006 member institutions to finish a year atop both Directors' Cup standings and the U.S. News & World Report’s college ratings. The Ephs scored 1,081.75 points in the 2003-04 academic year, easily outpacing second-place Emory (811) …

First-year head coach Kris Herman took Softball (32-10) to new heights, as the team won its first-ever NESCAC tournament title and finished the year ranked 20th nationally. Pitcher Liz Gluck ’05 (15-3) was named All-American …

Baseball (30-12) advanced to the conference title game, falling 5-4 to Amherst. Conference player of the year Jabe Bergeron ’04, later signed to the Mets’ farm system, led NESCAC in nearly every offensive category …

Eph Tennis was in the national spotlight once again, as Men’s Tennis was NCAA runner-up and Women’s Tennis finished third at NCAAs. The men, in the national championship match for the fourth straight year, lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Middlebury. Similarly, the women were ousted by Amherst in a tough 5-3 match in the national semis. Earning All-American status were Andrew Murray ’04 and Steph Hall ’04 …

Matt Winkler ’04 ran a 3:50.91 to win the Div. III NCAA title at 1500 meters, helping Men’s Track & Field to 13th nationally. Women’s Track & Field took eighth at the NCAA meet. Top-five finishes came from Joyia Chadwick ’05 (third in heptathlon), Anna Morrison ’07 (fifth in discus), Katie Fulton ’06 (fifth in 100m), and Caroline Cretti ’06 (fourth in 5000m). Setting a school record in the 4x100m relay, a time good for fifth in the nation, was the team of Fulton, Meredith Jones ’04, Claire Samuel ’04, and Carolyn Robbs ’04 …

Women’s Crew’s varsity eight took third at Div. III NCAAs, just two seconds behind champion Ithaca. All-Americans were Hayley Horowitz ’04 and Phoebe Fischer-Groban ’06. Men’s Crew’s varsity eight rowed to fourth in the ECAC Championships …

Men’s Golf enjoyed its typical success in New England, taking third in the district shootout and winning the Little Three for the sixth straight season …

Women’s Lacrosse (10-5) fell 19-10 in the NESCAC semifinals to rival Amherst. Molly Jennings ’04 was named All-American, and Kaylan Tildsley ’07 was national rookie of the year. Men’s Lacrosse (3-10) narrowly dropped its season-ending rivalry game with Amherst, 11-9.
