DIVERSITY INITIATIVES UPDATE

COMMENCEMENT, BACCALAUREATE SPEAKERS: DANCER CHUCK DAVIS AND ACTOR ROGER REES

Dancer, choreographer, and founder of the African-American Dance Ensemble Chuck Davis will be the principal speaker at Williams' 217th Commencement. Roger Rees, British-American actor and director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival, will be the Baccalaureate speaker.

EXPROPRIATION OF IRAQI ANTIQUITIES SUBJECT OF BERNHARDSSON BOOK

Assistant professor of Middle Eastern history Magnus T. Bernhardsson is the author of "Reclaiming a Plundered Past: Archaeology and Nation Building in Modern Iraq" ( University of Texas Press).

PROF. CASSIDAY APPOINTED GAUDINO SCHOLAR

President Schapiro has announced the appointment of associate professor of Russian Julie A. Cassiday as the College's Gaudino Scholar for 2006-2007. At Williams since 1994, professor Cassiday has been a fellow at the Oakley Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences and a research scholar with the American Council of Teachers of Russian.

PROF. GOLDSTEIN'S "CULINARY CULTURE OF EUROPE" WINS "OSCAR"
"The Culinary Culture of Europe: Identity, Diversity and Dialogue" (Council of Europe Publication, 2005), co-edited by professor of Russian Darra Goldstein, has been named the "best culinary history book" in English in 2005 by Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

COLLEGE ADVISING AVAILABLE FOR CHILDREN OF ALUMNI
From 1 June through 17 November 2006, sons and daughters of alumni who are rising seniors or seniors may meet with a senior admission officer for an early evaluation of their credentials. To schedule, call the Office of Admission at 413-597-2214. Important: Be sure to identify yourself as an alumni daughter or son. When you visit Williams, bring a copy of your most recent (unofficial) transcript and any test scores. If you visit while the College is in session, plan to join a campus tour, attend a group information session, and attend classes.

DICK FARLEY MAKES COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

One of the greatest Division III coaches of all time, with five perfect seasons, Gridiron Club of Greater Boston New England Coach of the Year (four times), and NESCAC Coach of the Year twice among his many honors, Dick Farley will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in August.

EPH STANDOUT SWIMMER LYNDSAY PAYNE WINS 2006 HONDA INSPIRATION AWARD

At 12 years old, Lindsay was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, yet was able to recover and become one of the finest female swimmers in Division III history.
