TRUSTEES APPROVE 2009-2010 BUDGET
"I am happy to report that at their meeting this weekend the trustees approved an operating budget for the coming academic year that calls for spending of $205 million, keeps our financial aid program intact, and contains no layoffs..." COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERS, HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS

Clarence Otis '77, chairman and CEO of Darden Restaurants, will be the principal speaker at Williams' 220th Commencement exercises on Sunday, June 7. Anne Garrels, senior foreign correspondent of National Public Radio, will speak at Baccalaureate exercises on Saturday, June 6. President Morty Schapiro will confer honorary degrees on all three as well as astronaut and Senator John H. Glenn, writer Tracy Kidder, historian James M. McPherson, and musician James Taylor. FIVE AWARD-WINNING JOURNALISTS AT WILLIAMS APRIL 25
American journalists Thomas B. Edsall, John Kifner '63, Elizabeth Kolbert,  Shayla Harris '97, and moderator Christopher "Kit" Jones '62 will discuss "The Future of News: Journalism in a Post-Print World." The forum and a newly announced fellowship honor the memory of Jeff Jones '66. Read on.

Class of '57 Program Helps Students Work Alongside Profs.
The Class of 1957 Summer Research Program is open to Williams first-years, sophomores, and juniors. Students whose proposals are approved get free on-campus summer housing and a stipend for 10 weeks of full-time research.  Last summer's 28 students did research ranging from economics to English to classics to religion. Prof. Smith Wins Teacher-Scholar Award
Tom Smith '88, associate professor of chemistry, was named a national winner of the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, which carries an unrestricted research grant of $60,000. Read on.



Prof. Siniawer on a Century of Violent Japanese Politics
"Ruffians, Yakuza, Nationalists: The Violent Politics of Modern Japan, 1860-1960" by Associate Professor of History Eiko Maruko Siniawer '97 was recently published by Cornell University Press.  Read on.


15th Century Mass Explored and Illuminated
"On 14 October 1487, at seven in the evening, the Saint Donatian Mass composed by Jacob Obrecht and commissioned by Adriane de Vos in memory of her husband, was first sung at Mass in the Jacobskerk in Bruges..." Professor of Music Jennifer Bloxam's Web site illuminates this unusually well-documented occasion.

Williams Cycling Weekend July 17-19
This trip for cycling enthusiasts will give Ephs the chance to ride together on the terrific rural roads of Berkshire County, Southern Vermont, and New York State. Off the bikes we'll exercise our minds with rich intellectual and cultural opportunities while enjoying some appropriate carbo-loading. Replaying America's First College Baseball Game
The 150th anniversary celebration of the first college baseball game, Williams vs. Amherst in the summer of 1859, will be aired live on ESPNU when the two storied rivals meet in Pittsfield's historic Wahconah Park Sunday, May 3rd at 1:00 PM.  Read on.

"Denis and Lynda Murphy's family had its world turned upside down in March of 2004 when older daughter Jaclyn (14) was diagnosed with a brain tumor..." Read on.

 

Christi Kelsey Named Volleyball Coach
Williams athletic director Harry Sheehy '75 announced last week that Christi Kelsey has been named the head coach of Williams women's volleyball. She succeeds Fran Vandermeer who in nine years directed the Ephs to five Little Three titles, six NESCAC titles and four NCAA Elite Eight appearances in accumulating a Williams record 244 wins.
