FRIEDMAN REDUX
New York Times Columnist and author Thomas Friedman appeared at Williams on
April 10 to deliver his lecture, "The World is Flat: Some Second

COMMENCEMENT, BACCALAUREATE SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED
Chuck Davis, noted dancer, choreographer, and founder of the
African-American Dance Ensemble, will be the principal speaker at Williams'
217th Commencement. Roger Rees, British-American actor and director of the
Williamstown Theatre Festival, will be the Baccalaureate speaker.

WHAT'S THE WILLIAMS CAMPAIGN AGAIN? AND HOW'S IT GOING?
It's about improving every aspect of Williams to create a model for liberal

PROF. GOLDBERG'S "STRUGGLE FOR EMPIRE" RELEASED
Assistant professor of history Eric J. Goldberg's new book, "Struggle for
Empire: Kingship and Conflict under Louis the German, 817-876" (Cornell
University Press, 2006), examines the contention for power in medieval
Europe that followed the death of Charlemagne. Goldberg approaches the era
through the reign of Charlemagne's grandson, Louis the German.

PROF. GEHRING'S RESEARCH SUPPORTED BY NIH GRANT
The National Institutes of Health have awarded Williams a $202,337 grant to
support the research of assistant professor of chemistry Amy Gehring.

PROF. PASACHOFF DELIVERS ANNUAL SIGMA XI LECTURE
Field Memorial Professor of Astronomy Jay Pasachoff delivered the two-part
Sigma Xi lecture on "Syzygy x 3: Transits, Occultations, and
Eclipses" April
20-21. The lectures discussed Williams expeditions to study syzygy, or
alignment, of three astronomical objects.

Williams undergrads, under the direction of associate professor of biology
Wendy Raymond, are getting local elementary school students to love science
by volunteering in Williamstown and

Adams. The Howard Hughes Medical
Institute is sponsoring the initiative.

From June 1 through November 17, 2006, children of alumni who are rising
high school juniors or seniors may meet with a senior admission officer for
an early evaluation of their credentials. To schedule, call the Office of
Admission at 413.597.2214. Important: Be sure to identify yourself as an
alumni daughter or son. When you visit Williams, bring a copy of your most
recent (unofficial) transcript and any test scores. If you visit while the
College is in session, plan to join a campus tour, attend a group
information session, or attend classes.

Williams is .75 of a point--yes, that's right, three-quarters of a
point--behind The College of New Jersey in the Directors' Cup rankings.
Williams has won the cup nine out of the 10 years it has been awarded.
