This year, for the first time, Williams will offer electronic balloting for our annual Alumni Trustee and Tyng Administrator election. If you meet the March 26 registration deadline, you'll receive an e-ballot shortly thereafter. If you don't take advantage of this new voting system by March 26, you'll still be able to vote – but only by paper ballot. (Paper ballots will be mailed in April.) The mural series, “Town Green,” which graces the two-story atrium of the Cambridge City Hall Annex, carries a theme of outdoor urban scenes. *SEE http://www.williams.edu/admin/news/releases.php?id=662 OAKLEY TITLES EXAMINE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN HISTORY AND IN CRISIS Francis Oakley, the Edward Dorr Griffin Professor of the History of Ideas, Emeritus, and 13th President of Williams is co-editor and author, respectively, of “Governance, Accountability, and the Future of the Catholic Church” (Continuum, 2004) and “The Conciliarist Tradition: Constitutionalism in the Catholic Church 1300-1870” (Oxford University Press, 2003). The first examines current perspectives on the crisis within the Catholic Church and the second, a revised and extended version of professor Oakley’s 1999 Berlin Lectures, deals with the struggle between monarchical and constitutionalist factions within the church. *SEE http://www.williams.edu/admin/news/releases.php?id=638 A COMPLEX WASHINGTON REVEALED IN BURNS-DUNN BIOGRAPHY Woodrow Wilson Professor of Government, Emeritus, James MacGregor Burns ’39 and professor of humanities Susan Dunn have published “George Washington” (Times Books, 2004), the first title in a new series on the American presidents edited by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. The authors reveal a “hot-tempered man of courage and intellect,” says Burns, whose shaping of the presidency was his ultimate achievement. Burns won the Pulitzer Prize for his biography “Roosevelt: The Soldier of Freedom” in 1971. *SEE http://www.williams.edu/admin/news/releases.php?id=620 CLINICAL DEPRESSION SUBJECT OF SOLOMON RESEARCH A grant from the National Institutes of Health will enable assistant professor of psychology Ari Solomon to research ways of defining clinical depression using statistical techniques. Professor Solomon will lead a team of researchers to study the experience of (and vulnerability to) depression in a project titled Taxometric Analyses of Unipolar Depression. *SEE http://www.williams.edu/admin/news/releases.php?id=657 GEOLOGIST STOLL TO STUDY MARINE PRODUCTIVITY, CLIMATE CHANGE The American Chemical Society has awarded a $50,000 Petroleum Research Fund grant to assistant professor of geosciences Heather Stoll to support her research on whether there is a correlation between changes in the “weathering style” of rocks (driven by climate and nutrient delivery rates) and their effect on marine productivity, especially in the case of the proliferation of algae. Professor Stoll’s recent work has focused on testing and developing new geochemical indicators for identifying past variations in ocean productivity. *SEE http://www.williams.edu/admin/news/releases.php?id=655 HISTORIAN HICKS AWARDED SCHOMBURG SCHOLARS RESIDENCY Assistant professor of history Cheryl Hicks has been awarded a Scholars-in-Residence Fellowship from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Waiting for the Ephs Friday in the national semis? Arch-rival Amherst, against whom the Ephmen are 2-1 this season. Ben Coffin ’04 showed why he was last year’s NCAA tournament player of the year in Saturday’s regional final, dominating with 32 points and 21 rebounds. Highlights included Meghan Faughnan’s ’06 second in the 200-meter backstroke, Rachel Gealy’s ’04 second in the 3-meter board, and a fourth-place finish by the 400-meter freestyle relay… Strong individual finishes marked Indoor Track and Field’s trip to nationals. Leading the field contingent were Kristin Moss ’06 (seventh in the high jump), Meredith Jones ’04 (fifth in the pole vault), and Audrey Lumley-Sapanski ’04 (eighth in the triple jump). On the track, Jenn Campbell ’05 was fifth in the 1500-meter run and the Distance Medley Relay took fourth. The lone male qualifier, Neal Holtschulte ’06, was fourth in the 5000-meters… Behind strong Alpine finishes, Skiing ended its season 13th in the country … Women’s Basketball’s Maggie Miller ’07 was named New England Rookie of the Year after leading NESCAC in scoring with a 15.6 ppg average … Wrestling’s Tom Prairie ’05 earned All-American status once again, taking fourth at NCAAs at 125 pounds … NESCAC selected All-American Molly Wasserman ’04 as Women’s Hockey’s Player of the Year after she helped lead the Ephs to a 12-4 conference record … Women’s Squash ended the year eighth in the nation, while Men’s Squash was ninth in winning the Hoehn Division Cup. In the past few weeks Williams’ network has seen several new versions of the virus W32/Bagle, which, like other recent viruses, can masquerade as any user whose address it has found in an infected computer. Its attachment is a zip file, and the message contains a password to open the file. Because the attachment is password-protected, our virus scanners can’t detect the embedded virus, and we’re therefore unable to recognize and block it. These emails are very deceiving and appear to be legitimate messages from Williams. Williams is not sending out these messages and will never send out zip files in this manner. Please delete any e-mail messages that fit this description. We ask that you do not click on any attachment unless you know who sent it and why they sent it to you.
