THE GREENING OF WILLIAMS COLLEGE
At the January board meeting, Williams' trustees voted unanimously to adopt the
goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, by the year 2012, to 5 percent below
the College's 1990-91 levels--and to 10 percent below '90-'91 by 2020. Said
President Schapiro, "As an educational institution, our great influence
derives from our students, who, in this case, will be involved in multiple ways
with an engaging and important effort, the lessons from which they take with
them as they enter the wider world."

Lisa Corrin, the Williams College Museum of Art's new director, previously
served as artistic overseer of
Seattle's
new waterfront Olympic Sculpture Park, which opened January 20. According to
The Seattle Times, she's responsible for much of what's remarkable about this
park, having worked "with great insight into the individual sculptures and
the city's wider history of sculpture collection."

FIVE SENIORS WIN DR. HERCHEL SMITH FELLOWSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN ENGLAND
Shane Bobrycki, Caitlin Hanley, Catherine Kelly, Alan Rodrigues, Paul Rogers
and Martin Williams will study at Cambridge University for two years following
graduation from Williams.

WHO GETS AHEAD? WHO DOESN'T? WHY NOT?
Dave Zimmerman, Orin Sage Professor of Political Economy, has studied poverty,
welfare dependency, and the impact of high school curricula on students' wages.
Now he turns his attention to higher education issues. As director of the
Williams Project on the Economics of Higher Education, Prof. Zimmerman is
studying how Williams identifies and reaches out to low-income students and
"how to highlight that Williams is both very good and affordable."

SIX PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Williams promoted six assistant professors to the rank of associate professor
with tenure, effective
July
1, 2007. They are Magnus Bernhardsson (modern Middle Eastern
history), Satyan Devadoss (mathematics), Soledad Fox (Spanish and comparative
literature), Eric Goldberg (medieval history), Marjorie Hirsch (music), and
Darel Paul (political science).

NSF GRANTS PROF. KAPLAN SUPPORT FOR CHEMICAL SCIENCE WORKSHOPS...
The National Science Foundation has announced that Professor Lawrence Kaplan
(Williams' Halford R. Clark Professor of Natural Sciences) has received an
Undergraduate Education, Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement program
grant.

...AND GRANTS PROF. TING RESEARCH SUPPORT
The NSF also awarded $263,274 to assistant professor of biology Claire Ting for
her work in exploring the structure, function and evolution of the photosynthetic
apparatus in one of the most important marine primary producers of the world.
Meanwhile, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation has awarded Prof. Ting a national
fellowship for her effectiveness as a college teacher as well as for her
scholarship.
