FROM THE DESK OF...ELISSA BROWN '09

"I think I've managed to pinpoint an important concept: if you wear summer clothing and flip-flops on a cold day in California, then you get cold and feel foolish; if you wear summer clothing and flip-flops on a cold day in Williamstown, then you get frostbite/pneumonia and feel nothing because you're dead..."

EPH SPORTS

For the first time in five years, Williams is not in first place in the Directors' Cup after fall competition. The Ephs are currently sixth with 216 points, 123 behind leader The College of New Jersey. But perennially strong Eph squads are prepared to make their mark as Winter Study has descended on Williamstown.

A dramatic three-pointer at the buzzer by Chris Rose '08 lifted Men's Basketball (12-3) to a 68-66 win over Connecticut College. The young Eph squad awaits its Feb. 3 rematch with Amherst, which won the teams' first matchup 66-56.

Women's Basketball (13-3) fell to Wesleyan 70-59 in a disappointing overtime loss, before bouncing back with a 79-49 win at Connecticut College. Earlier this winter, Colleen Hession '06 became just the eighth Ephwoman to top 1,000 career points.

Men's Ice Hockey ( 6-5-2) shut down a strong Colby club 5-2 Saturday, while Women's Ice Hockey ( 5-5-1) took down ninth-ranked Wisconsin-River Falls 3-2 before getting edged 5-4 by No. 5 St. Thomas. Wrestling stands at fifth in New England Div. 3, picking up a big win over No. 2 Norwich earlier this year.

Women's Swimming has already secured the Little Three title, led by returning national swimmer of the year Lindsay Payne '06. Standout first-year swimmer Norman Scott has burst onto the scene in New England, already breaking the school record in the 200 butterfly to help Men's Swimming to wins over Amherst, Tufts, and Wesleyan.

Women's Squash swept Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin in Maine, while 10th-ranked Men's Squash battled to a narrow 5-4 defeat at the hands of No. 8 Dartmouth.

Men's Indoor Track and Field took second at the very competitive Dartmouth Relays with three event wins, including one from the school-record setting 4x200 relay team of John Symanski '06, Andrew Arons '07, Deividas Seferis '09, and Nick Reynolds '08.

Women's Indoor Track and Field is off to its usual fast start, finishing second at Dartmouth and winning five events at the Tufts Invitational.
