WILLIAMS SEEKS ALUMNI AND PARENT INPUT FOR NEW DIVERSITY
INITIATIVES
As a special focus this year, Williams is seeking ways to
make the College
as welcoming as possible to members of historically
marginalized groups.
All members of the College community, including alumni and
parents, are
encouraged to contribute to the Diversity Initiatives
process by sharing
their thoughts and experiences. Go to:

STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF ORGANIZE FOR TSUNAMI RELIEF
Many in the Williams community have expressed shock, grief,
and anxiety
over the devastation caused by the
Indian
Ocean tsunami. Members of
student groups have joined with College departments and
offices to form
the Williams Tsunami Relief Coalition to assist in relief
efforts through
fundraising, and to act as a network of support for members
of our
community.

CHAPIN LIBRARY EXHIBITING CATHER MISCELLANY
The Chapin Library's current exhibition, "'She Loved
All Great Formal,
Noble Things': A Willa Cather Miscellany," organized
and written by David
H. Porter, the Harry C. Payne Visiting Professor of Liberal
Arts, will be
on view through February.

KAREN MERRILL WINS WESTERN HISTORY ASSOCIATION BOOK PRIZE
Associate professor of history Karen Merrill has been
awarded the Western
History Association's Robert G. Athearn Award for her book
"Public Lands
and Political Meaning," which focuses on the struggles
between organized
ranchers and federal land agencies.

KAPLAN AND RICHARDSON APPOINTED TO NAMED CHAIRS
Lawrence J. Kaplan has been named the Halford R. Clark
Professor of
Natural Science and David P. Richardson the William R.
Kenan, Jr.,
Professor of Chemistry.

PROFESSOR HAROLD H. WARREN DIES AT 82
The College notes with sadness the passing, on Thursday, of
Harold H.
Warren, the Halford R. Clark Professor of Natural Science,
emeritus, at
the age of 82. A mainstay of the Chemistry Department from
1950 to 1984,
professor Warren was known by generations of Williams
students as a
steady, calm, and fair teacher. Each year in his honor the
College bestows
the Harold H. Warren Prize to a student who demonstrates
excellence in
introductory organic chemistry.

MUSEUM SEEKS ART LOANS FOR ALUMNI EXHIBITION
WCMA seeks loans from alumni for the fourth Williams Alumni
Loan
Exhibition in 2006, the museum's 80th anniversary year.

COOL WEB SITES
The Multimedia Neuroscience Education Project, a National
Science
Foundation-funded site for learning about synaptic
transmission that has
been used in dozens of colleges and universities around the
world, is the
brainchild of professor of psychology Betty Zimmerberg. The
site features
animations programmed by Williams students and music by Judd
Greenstein

EPH SPORTS
Through fall NCAA competitions, the Ephs once again lead the
U.S. Sports
Academy Directors' Cup race, with 412 points to second-place
Messiah's
266. Williams is gunning for its ninth NCAA Div. III
Director's Cup in the
past 10 years.
Men's Basketball (11-3) had its Div. III-record 64-game win
streak snapped
by Wheaton (IL), 82-74. And despite 21 points and 18
rebounds from NESCAC
Player of the Week Tucker Kain '05, the Ephs dropped a 88-78
decision to
Amherst Saturday ...
Women's Basketball (11-2) got stellar effort from its deep
bench in a
86-62 win over archrival Amherst Saturday.
Men's Swimming and Diving took the Little Three title
Saturday with a
134-109 dual-meet win over Amherst. The women's team pulled
out a 155-141
victory over the rival Jeffs, to capture its own Little
Three crown ...
After knocking off Tufts 3-1, Men's Hockey (4-6-1) fell in
OT to
SUNY-Plattsburgh, 5-4. Women's Ice Hockey (5-6) ended its
swing through
Wisconsin with a 2-0 win over UW-River Falls ...
Wrestling placed in six classes, led by a victory by
All-American Tom
Prairie '05 at the 125-pounds, to take sixth in a strong
field at the
Simpson College (IA) Invite.
Indoor Track and Field opened its fall season over the
weekend at the
Dartmouth Relays, with the women placing third and the men
fifth. The
teams host their lone winter meet Saturday.
